The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 2026 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 20, 2026, with 6 people signed in online: 4 in support and 2 in opposition. The committee met in executive session on January 27, 2026 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House study it after the session ends, by a vote of 9–7. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On February 12, 2026 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 214–145. On February 12, 2026 the bill was referred to the Finance committee, whose chair waived the referral under House Rule 47(f). It crossed to the Senate and was referred to the Senate Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 19, 2026. The committee voted unanimously, 3–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on April 9, 2026. A floor amendment (2026-1273s), offered by Sen. Daryl Abbas, was adopted on a voice vote on April 9, 2026, changing the text of the bill. On April 9, 2026 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 7, 2026 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2026-1273s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Debra DeSimone. The bill was enrolled on June 4, 2026 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 19, 2026, making it Chapter 168 of the session laws.
