Majority — OUGHT TO PASS WITH AMENDMENT
This bill was presented by members of the Derry delegation and has no impact on other municipalities. Founded in the 1950s, the Derry Cooperative School District serves grades PreK-8. A town tuition agreement exists with Pinkerton Academy for high school students. The structure is unique, as all other cooperative districts consist of multiple towns. The majority believes Derry voters should dictate whether the Cooperative District continues to operate independently or as a department of the town council. Vote 9-8.
Minority — INEXPEDIENT TO LEGISLATE
This bill has nothing to do with improving public education in Derry. It is a second attempt to move the local school department under the auspices of the town to bring the school department budget within the town’s tax cap limits. All of the Derry town councilors unanimously oppose this bill, and the town administrator stated that the town had no role in or knowledge of in terms of proposing the bill.
