Committee — INEXPEDIENT TO LEGISLATE
The committee unanimously determined that we did not need to establish a study committee to determine the best way to dispose of vapes and e-cigarettes safely. Vapes and e-cigarettes contain the components of lithium ion batteries, which are banned from our landfills, and also may contain nicotine, which is considered a hazardous waste material which warrants special handling. Some units are not able to have these components separated, but some do, and that becomes a problem when dealing with proper disposal. We learned that the Solid Waste Working Group is already studying this issue and trying to devise solutions for the proper disposal of these products when they are used up. Since they are working on this issue and will offer suggested legislation in the future, a legislative study committee is unnecessary. Vote 14-0.
