The intent of this bill is to create a license plate for Gold Star Fathers and Gold Star immediate family members. Most of the committee was unaware until it was presented to us that there was an existing Gold Star Mother license plate but that there were no equivalent recognitions for fathers or immediate family members. It is clear to the committee on Transportation that fathers and immediate family members bear the same grief, mourning, and tragedy when their child, spouse, or direct sibling made the ultimate sacrifice during military service. Several members of the committee stated “the least we can do is give recognition in this meaningful way.” We can never understand the sacrifice and pain that these families have endured having lost a loved one in service to our nation; but we can stand in solidarity with them, share in their mourning, and provide a visible symbol of solidarity and remembrance by creating these license plates for them. Vote 16-0.
