The original bill added a water treatment professional to the New Hampshire Well Water Board with the goal of regulating water treatment and filtration systems, which are common in the nearly 50% of New Hampshire homes with wells. However, the board’s statutory responsibilities are restricted to determining the requirements for water well contractors and well pump installers, as well as setting standards for the construction, maintenance, and abandonment of wells. Therefore, a water treatment professional could not meaningfully contribute to the board’s mandates, and the board opposed the bill. During testimony, the NH Department of Environmental Services suggested a separate change to this statute to remove the state geologist from the board since they do not actively contribute to the board’s primary objectives, and are readily available to consult with the board whenever necessary. The bill as amended removes the state geologist from the New Hampshire Well Water Board without adding a position for a new water treatment professional. Vote 16-0. 26 27 FEBRUARY 2026
