The Story
It was introduced on January 9, 2025 and referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 18, 2025. The committee voted unanimously, 6–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 20, 2025 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 27, 2025 and was referred to the House Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 8, 2025, with 4 people signed in online: 3 in support and 1 in opposition. The committee met in executive session on April 8, 2025 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2025-1520h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–9. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On May 1, 2025 the House adopted “Lay SB171 on Table” on a division vote 170–165, on a motion by Rep. Timothy Soucy. On May 1, 2025 the House failed “Remove from Table” on a roll call 168–174, on a motion by Rep. Joe Sweeney. The bill died on the table when the session ended on December 17, 2025, having been set aside and never taken back up.
