The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2025 and referred to the House Education Policy and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 23, 2025, with 166 people signed in online: 9 in support and 157 in opposition. The committee met in executive session on February 19, 2025 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 9–8. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 20, 2025 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 209–164. It crossed to the Senate on March 20, 2025 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 15, 2025. The committee voted 3–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on May 15, 2025. On May 15, 2025 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 12, 2025 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 1, 2025, making it Chapter 145 of the session laws.
