The Story
It was introduced on January 3, 2024 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 1, 2024. The committee voted 3–2 to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2024-1114s). The committee's amendment (2024-1114s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 21, 2024, changing the text of the bill. On March 21, 2024 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 28, 2024 and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 24, 2024, with 11 people signed in online: 7 in support and 4 in opposition. The committee met in executive session on May 1, 2024 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House kill it, and the minority recommended that the House pass it, by a vote of 11–9. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On May 9, 2024 the House rejected a motion to kill it on a roll call 179–179. On May 9, 2024 the House failed “Lay SB576 on Table” on a roll call 180–181, on a motion by Rep. Marjorie Smith. On May 9, 2024 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 182–180. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2024 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 3, 2024, making it Chapter 173 of the session laws. It took effect on September 1, 2024.
