The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2024 and referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 17, 2024. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2024-0397s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2024-0397s) was adopted on a voice vote on February 8, 2024, changing the text of the bill. On February 8, 2024 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 12, 2024 and was referred to the House Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 24, 2024, with 185 people signed in online: 122 in support, 62 in opposition and 1 as neutral. The committee held a work session on May 1, 2024. The committee met in executive session on May 8, 2024 to vote on its recommendation. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On May 23, 2024 the House adopted “Lay SB440 on Table” on a division vote 224–137, on a motion by Rep. David Nagel.
