SB 221 (2024)
establishing a study committee to examine day care access and affordability.
- Status: Killed
- Term: 2023-2024
- House committee: Special Committee on Childcare
- Senate committee: Election Law and Municipal Affairs
- Subject: Study Committees and Commissions
The Story
It was introduced on January 19, 2023 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 7, 2023. The committee recommended that the Senate kill it. On March 30, 2023 the Senate rejected a motion to kill it on a voice vote. A floor amendment (2023-1256s), offered by Sen. James Gray, was adopted on a voice vote on March 30, 2023, changing the text of the bill. On March 30, 2023 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 6, 2023 and was referred to the House Special Committee on Childcare committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 10, 2023. The committee held work sessions on May 10, 2023 and May 17, 2023. The committee met in executive session on May 17, 2023 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee voted unanimously, 10–0, to recommend that the House kill it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 3, 2024 the House voted to kill it on a voice vote.
