The Story

It was introduced on January 19, 2023 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 14, 2023. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 16, 2023 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 30, 2023 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 6, 2023 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 25, 2023. The committee met in executive session on April 25, 2023 and May 3, 2023. The committee held a work session on May 3, 2023. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on May 30, 2023, September 26, 2023 and October 17, 2023. The committee met in executive session on November 13, 2023 to vote on its recommendation. The committee recommended, on a tied vote of 10–10, which carries no majority, that the House make no recommendation, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On January 3, 2024 the House adopted “Lay SB218 on Table” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Rick Ladd. The bill died on the table when the session ended on October 10, 2024, having been set aside and never taken back up.
