The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2024 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 8, 2024, with 354 people signed in online: 347 in support and 7 in opposition. The committee met in executive session on January 30, 2024, January 31, 2024, February 7, 2024, February 20, 2024, March 6, 2024 and March 18, 2024. The committee recommended, on a tied vote of 10–10, which carries no majority, that the House make no recommendation, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. A floor amendment (2024-1159h) was adopted on a division vote 189–186 on March 28, 2024, changing the text of the bill. On March 28, 2024 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held public hearings on April 30, 2024 and May 7, 2024. The committee voted 4–1 to recommend that the Senate pass it. A floor amendment (2024-2050s), offered by Sen. D'Allesandro, was adopted on a voice vote on May 22, 2024, changing the text of the bill. On May 22, 2024 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 30, 2024 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2024-2050s” on a division vote 183–171, on a motion by Rep. Rick Ladd. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2024 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 12, 2024, making it Chapter 182 of the session laws.
