SB 92-FN (2022)
relative to increasing the penalty for criminal mischief, the release of a defendant pending trial, and requiring law enforcement candidate background checks.
- Status: Died on the table
- Term: 2021-2022
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2021-0755s). The committee's amendment (2021-0755s) was adopted on a roll call 20–4 on March 18, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On March 18, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee met in executive session on May 10, 2021 and May 19, 2021. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on September 14, 2021, September 21, 2021, September 28, 2021 and October 5, 2021. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2021-2180h) by a vote of 11–10, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee held a work session on October 12, 2021. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. On January 6, 2022 the House voted to lay it on the table on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Abbas.
