The Story

It was introduced on January 5, 2022 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 14, 2022. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2022-1174s). The committee's amendment (2022-1174s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 31, 2022, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (2022-1299s), offered by Sen. Soucy, was adopted on a voice vote on March 31, 2022, changing the text of the bill. On March 31, 2022 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 31, 2022 and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 8, 2022. The committee met in executive session on April 13, 2022 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 20–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 21, 2022 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 12, 2022 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 20, 2022, making it Chapter 93 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2023.
