The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2022 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 12, 2022. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 3, 2022 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 17, 2022 and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 6, 2022. The committee met in executive session on April 8, 2022 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2022-1353h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 11–9. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2022-1353h) was adopted on a voice vote on April 21, 2022, changing the text of the bill. On April 21, 2022 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 176–151. On May 12, 2022 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. James Gray. The bill was enrolled on May 26, 2022 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 17, 2022, making it Chapter 212 of the session laws. It took effect on August 16, 2022.
