apportioning county commissioner districts.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2021-2022
  • House committee: Special Committee on Redistricting
  • Senate committee: Election Law and Municipal Affairs
  • Subject: Counties
  • Chapter law: 4

The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Special Committee on Redistricting committee. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee met in executive session on November 16, 2021 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2021-2273h), and the minority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2021-227), by a vote of 10–5. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On January 5, 2022 the House adopted “Special Order To next order of business” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. B. Griffin. On January 5, 2022 the House failed “Reconsider Special order” on a roll call 35–316, on a motion by Rep. Cali-Pitts. The committee's amendment (2021-2273h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 5, 2022, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (2021-2276h) was rejected on a division vote 157–182 on January 5, 2022. On January 5, 2022 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 184–159. On January 5, 2022 the House failed “Reconsider” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Doucette. It crossed to the Senate on January 5, 2022 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 26, 2022. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. A floor amendment (2022-0713s), offered by Sen. Soucy, was rejected on a roll call 11–13 on February 16, 2022. On February 16, 2022 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on February 17, 2022 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on February 24, 2022, making it Chapter 4 of the session laws.
