The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2022 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 25, 2022. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2022-0998h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–8. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2022-0998h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 15, 2022, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (2022-1083h), offered by Rep. Mason, was rejected on a roll call 152–168 on March 15, 2022. On March 15, 2022 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 166–157. It crossed to the Senate on March 17, 2022 and was referred to the Senate Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 30, 2022. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2022-1688s). On April 28, 2022 the Senate adopted “Special Order to after HB 629, Without Objection”. The committee's amendment (2022-1688s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 28, 2022, changing the text of the bill. On April 28, 2022 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. On May 12, 2022 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Rick Ladd. The bill was enrolled on May 12, 2022 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 20, 2022. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 15, 2022 the House voted 150–170 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
