The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2021-0710s). The committee's amendment (2021-0710s) was adopted on a roll call 14–10 on March 18, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On March 18, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–9. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On June 4, 2021 the House rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a division vote 186–186, on a motion by Rep. Jim Maggiore. On June 4, 2021 the House rejected a motion to kill it and bar the subject for the rest of the term on a roll call 174–197, on a motion by Rep. Jim Maggiore. On June 4, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 195–177. On June 4, 2021 the House failed “Reconsider” on a roll call 171–201, on a motion by Rep. True. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 21, 2021, making it Chapter 88 of the session laws. It took effect on August 20, 2021.
