The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee met in executive session on March 11, 2021 to vote on its recommendation. The committee recommended that the House make no recommendation. On April 8, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 204–169. It crossed to the Senate on April 8, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate kill it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 13, 2021 the Senate rejected a motion to kill it on a voice vote. A floor amendment (2021-1465s), offered by Sen. Giuda, was adopted on a voice vote on May 13, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On May 13, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 10, 2021 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2021-1465s” on a roll call 211–150, on a motion by Rep. Rick Ladd. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 30, 2021, making it Chapter 161 of the session laws.
