HB 555 (2021)

relative to prisoners' voting rights.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2021-2022
  • House committee: Election Law
  • Senate committee: Election Law and Municipal Affairs
  • Subject: Elections
  • Chapter law: 96

The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee met in executive session on March 5, 2021 and March 10, 2021. The committee voted unanimously, 20–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. It crossed to the Senate on April 1, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. On April 7, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On April 7, 2021 the House failed “Reconsider” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Jason Osborne. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 20, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 1, 2021, making it Chapter 96 of the session laws.
