The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee voted 19–2 to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. It crossed to the Senate on April 1, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. On April 7, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On April 7, 2021 the House failed “Reconsider” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Jason Osborne. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 22, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. On May 6, 2021 the Senate adopted “Enrolled RC 23Y-0N”. The bill was enrolled on May 6, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 17, 2021, making it Chapter 39 of the session laws.
