The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee met in executive session on March 11, 2021 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2021-0616h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 12–8. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2021-0616h) was adopted on a voice vote on April 8, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On April 8, 2021 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 198–178. It crossed to the Senate on April 8, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 13, 2021 the Senate rejected a motion to lay it on the table, on a motion by Sen. Sherman. On May 13, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 6, 2021, making it Chapter 106 of the session laws.
