HB 236 (2021)

creating a statute of limitation on civil actions relative to damage caused by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2021-2022
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 133

The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee met in executive session on March 2, 2021 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 11–10. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On April 8, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On April 8, 2021 the House failed “Reconsider” on a division vote 117–226, on a motion by Rep. Mark McLean. It crossed to the Senate on April 8, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2021-1695s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2021-1695s) was adopted on a voice vote on May 27, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On May 27, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 10, 2021 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2021-1695s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Gordon. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 23, 2021, making it Chapter 133 of the session laws.
