The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2021 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 11–10. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On April 7, 2021 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 198–169. It crossed to the Senate on April 8, 2021 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2021-1708s). The committee's amendment (2021-1708s) was adopted on a voice vote on May 27, 2021, changing the text of the bill. On May 27, 2021 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. On June 10, 2021 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2021-1708s” on a roll call 206–155, on a motion by Rep. Abbas. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2021 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 23, 2021, making it Chapter 130 of the session laws.
