HB 1375 (2020)

relative to claims for medical monitoring.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2019-2020
  • House committee: Commerce and Consumer Affairs
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2020 and referred to the House Commerce and Consumer Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 16, 2020. The committee held a work session on February 3, 2020. The committee met in executive session on February 4, 2020 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 19–1 to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 19, 2020 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 11, 2020 and was referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The Senate withdrew that referral and sent the bill to the Judiciary committee instead. The committee held a public hearing on June 24, 2020. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2020-1568s). The committee's amendment (2020-1568s) was adopted on a roll call 14–10 on June 29, 2020, changing the text of the bill. On June 29, 2020 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 30, 2020 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment” on a roll call 227–105, on a motion by Rep. Billie Butler. The bill was enrolled on July 10, 2020 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on August 7, 2020. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 16, 2020 the House voted 191–138 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
