SB 218 (2019)

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2019-2020
  • House committee: Transportation
  • Senate committee: Transportation
  • Subject: Miscellaneous

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2019 and referred to the Senate Transportation committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 5, 2019. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 14, 2019 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 20, 2019 and was referred to the House Transportation committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 16, 2019. The committee met in executive session on May 14, 2019 and May 28, 2019. The committee recommended that the House make no recommendation. On June 6, 2019 the House rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a division vote 154–196, on a motion by Rep. McGuire. On June 6, 2019 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 206–148. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2019 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 10, 2019. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 19, 2019 the Senate voted 14–10 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
