HB 504 (2019)

- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2019-2020
- House committee: Legislative Administration
- Senate committee: Election Law and Municipal Affairs

The Story
It was introduced on January 3, 2019 and referred to the House Legislative Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 24, 2019. The committee met in executive session on February 13, 2019 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 8–6, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 7, 2019 the House rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a division vote 161–183, on a motion by Rep. Baldasaro. On March 7, 2019 the House voted to pass it on a division vote 200–149. It crossed to the Senate on March 14, 2019 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 1, 2019. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 6, 2019 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2019 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 10, 2019. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 18, 2019 the House voted 221–157 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
