HB 293 (2019)

relative to employee credit privacy.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2019-2020
  • House committee: Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services
  • Senate committee: Commerce
  • Subject: Employment

The Story

It was introduced on January 2, 2019 and referred to the House Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 20, 2019. The committee met in executive session on March 6, 2019 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 12–7, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 20, 2019 the House rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a roll call 145–212, on a motion by Rep. Jack Flanagan. On March 20, 2019 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 28, 2019 and was referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The committee recommended that the Senate make no recommendation. On May 30, 2019 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2019 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 10, 2019. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 18, 2019 the House voted 221–158 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
