HB 211 (2019)
relative to inquiries by prospective employers concerning salary history.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2019-2020
- House committee: Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services
- Senate committee: Commerce
- Subject: Employment
The Story
It was introduced on January 2, 2019 and referred to the House Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitative Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 23, 2019. The committee met in executive session on February 6, 2019 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2019-0202h) by a vote of 12–8, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2019-0202h) was adopted on a voice vote on February 14, 2019, changing the text of the bill. On February 14, 2019 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 212–139. It crossed to the Senate on March 7, 2019 and was referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The committee recommended that the Senate kill it. On May 30, 2019 the Senate rejected a motion to kill it. On May 30, 2019 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2019 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 10, 2019. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 18, 2019 the House voted 224–157 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
