The Story

It was introduced on January 2, 2019 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held public hearings on January 15, 2019 and February 12, 2019. The committee met in executive session on February 19, 2019 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2019-0556h) by a vote of 15–2, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 19, 2019 the House rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a division vote 127–222, on a motion by Rep. Camarota. The committee's amendment (2019-0556h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 19, 2019, changing the text of the bill. On March 19, 2019 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 28, 2019 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 9, 2019. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 25, 2019 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 8, 2019 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 5, 2019, making it Chapter 45 of the session laws.
