The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2018 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 9, 2018. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2018-0071s). The committee's amendment (2018-0071s) was adopted on a voice vote on January 18, 2018, changing the text of the bill. On January 18, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 7, 2018 and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 28, 2018. The committee met in executive session on March 28, 2018 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 12–4 to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On April 12, 2018 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On April 12, 2018 the bill was referred to the Finance committee, whose chair waived the referral under House Rule 46(f). The bill was enrolled on April 26, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 25, 2018, making it Chapter 115 of the session laws.
