  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2017-2018
  • House committee: Commerce and Consumer Affairs
  • Senate committee: Commerce
  • Subject: Insurance
  • Chapter law: 208

The Story

It was introduced on January 19, 2017 and referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 7, 2017. The committee recommended that the Senate send it back to committee. On March 9, 2017 the Senate voted to send it back to committee on a voice vote. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2017-2553s). The committee's amendment (2017-2553s) was rejected on a roll call 2–21 on January 3, 2018. On January 3, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 7, 2018 and was referred to the House Commerce and Consumer Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 27, 2018. The committee held work sessions on April 4, 2018 and April 11, 2018. The committee met in executive session on April 17, 2018 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House pass it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House study it after the session ends by a vote of 11–8, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On May 2, 2018 the House adopted “Special Order to first order of business on 5/3/2018” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. John Hunt. On May 3, 2018 the House rejected a motion to study it after the session ends on a roll call 154–178. On May 3, 2018 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On May 3, 2018 the House failed “Reconsider SB 189” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. White. The bill was enrolled on May 10, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 8, 2018, making it Chapter 208 of the session laws. It took effect on August 7, 2018.
