SB 170 (2018)
relative to the authority of towns to issue bonds for the expansion of broadband infrastructure.
- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 2017-2018
- House committee: Municipal and County Government
- Senate committee: Public and Municipal Affairs
- Subject: Municipalities
- Chapter law: 118
The Story
It was introduced on January 19, 2017 and referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 8, 2017. The committee recommended that the Senate kill it. On March 9, 2017 the Senate rejected a motion to kill it on a voice vote. On March 9, 2017 the Senate adopted “Rerefer” on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. James Gray. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2017-2497s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-2497s) was adopted on a voice vote on January 3, 2018, changing the text of the bill. On January 3, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 7, 2018 and was referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 27, 2018. The committee met in executive session on April 11, 2018 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 16–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 19, 2018 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 3, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2018-1808e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on May 30, 2018, making it Chapter 118 of the session laws. It took effect on May 30, 2018.
