The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2017 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 25, 2017. The committee met in executive session on February 1, 2017 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 19–1 to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 15, 2017 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on February 16, 2017 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 28, 2017. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate send it back to committee, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 20, 2017 the Senate voted to send it back to committee on a voice vote. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2017-2540s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-2540s) was adopted on a voice vote on January 3, 2018, changing the text of the bill. On January 3, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 26, 2018 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 2540s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. B. Griffin. The bill was enrolled on May 3, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 8, 2018, making it Chapter 165 of the session laws.
