  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2017-2018
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
  • Chapter law: 159

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2018 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 11, 2018. The committee met in executive session on January 16, 2018 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 20–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 8, 2018 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on February 15, 2018 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 20, 2018. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2018-1333s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2018-1333s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 12, 2018, changing the text of the bill. On April 12, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 19, 2018 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 1333s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Welch. The bill was enrolled on May 3, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2018-1818e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 4, 2018, making it Chapter 159 of the session laws.
