  • Term: 2017-2018
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Discrimination
  • Chapter law: 176

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2018 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held public hearings on January 31, 2018 and February 13, 2018. The committee met in executive session on February 27, 2018 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2018-0680h). The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 10–8, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 7, 2018 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 195–129. On March 7, 2018 the House failed “Reconsider HB 1319” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. T. Smith. It crossed to the Senate on March 8, 2018 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 16, 2018. The committee recommended that the Senate study it after the session ends. On May 2, 2018 the Senate failed “Refer to Interim Study, RC 11Y-12N”. On May 2, 2018 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 10, 2018 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 8, 2018, making it Chapter 176 of the session laws.
