SB 8-FN (2017)

relative to school attendance in towns with no public schools.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2017-2018
  • House committee: Education
  • Senate committee: Education
  • Subject: Education - General
  • Chapter law: 182

The Story

It was introduced on January 19, 2017 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 31, 2017. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 23, 2017 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 15, 2017. The committee met in executive session on May 2, 2017 and May 16, 2017. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2017-1786h) by a vote of 13–6, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-1786h) was adopted on a voice vote on June 1, 2017, changing the text of the bill. On June 1, 2017 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 210–147. On June 8, 2017 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes, on a motion by Sen. Reagan. The bill was enrolled on June 22, 2017 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2017-2375e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 29, 2017, making it Chapter 182 of the session laws. It took effect on August 28, 2017.
