The Story
It was introduced on March 9, 2017 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 21, 2017. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2017-1086s). The committee's amendment (2017-1086s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 30, 2017, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (2017-1221s), offered by Sen. Woodburn, was rejected on a roll call 9–14 on March 30, 2017. On March 30, 2017 the Senate voted to pass it with changes and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 16, 2017. The committee held a public hearing on May 23, 2017 on a proposed non-germane amendment (2017-1854h). The committee met in executive session on May 23, 2017 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House pass it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2017-1854h) by a vote of 18–1, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-1854h) was adopted on a voice vote on June 1, 2017, changing the text of the bill. On June 1, 2017 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 8, 2017 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes, on a motion by Sen. Regina Birdsell. The bill was enrolled on June 22, 2017 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2017-2359e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 10, 2017, making it Chapter 216 of the session laws.
