SB 230-FN (2017)

establishing the Uniform Power of Attorney Act.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2017-2018
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 178

The Story

It was introduced on January 19, 2017 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 14, 2017. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2017-0771s), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-0771s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 16, 2017, changing the text of the bill. On March 16, 2017 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 28, 2017. The committee met in executive session on April 25, 2017 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2017-1504h) by a vote of 12–3, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2017-1504h) was adopted on a voice vote on May 4, 2017, changing the text of the bill. On May 4, 2017 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 11, 2017 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Sharon Carson. An enrolled bill amendment (2017-2030e) was adopted on a voice vote on May 31, 2017. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 8, 2017 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2017-2030e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 28, 2017, making it Chapter 178 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2018.
