The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2016 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 26, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2016-0342s). The committee's amendment (0342s) was adopted on a voice vote on February 11, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On February 11, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2016-0641s). The committee's amendment (0641s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 3, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On March 3, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 10, 2016 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 22, 2016. The committee met in executive session on March 29, 2016, April 5, 2016 and April 12, 2016. The minority of the committee recommended that the House kill it. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2016-1362h) by a vote of 14–6, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2016-1362h) was adopted on a voice vote on May 11, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On May 11, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 207–134. On May 19, 2016 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Reagan. The bill was enrolled on June 1, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2016-2112e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 16, 2016, making it Chapter 272 of the session laws. It took effect on July 1, 2017.
