The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2015 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 3, 2015. The committee met in executive session on February 10, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on April 30, 2015, June 2, 2015, September 22, 2015 and October 1, 2015. The committee met in executive session on October 27, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 19–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2015-2523h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2015-2523h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 6, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On January 6, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On January 6, 2016 the bill was referred to the Finance committee, whose chair waived the referral under House Rule 46(f). It crossed to the Senate on February 18, 2016 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 1, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 10, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on April 7, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 25, 2016, making it Chapter 22 of the session laws.
