The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2015 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 17, 2015. The committee met in executive session on March 3, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on March 17, 2015, May 19, 2015, June 2, 2015 and September 16, 2015. The committee met in executive session on September 29, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 15–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2015-2405h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on January 6, 2016. The committee's amendment (2015-2405h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 20, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On January 20, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on February 18, 2016 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 19, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2016-1767s). The committee's amendment (1767s) was adopted on a voice vote on May 5, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On May 5, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 19, 2016 the House failed “House Non-Concurs with Senate Amendment 1767s and Requests CofC” on a division vote 131–152, on a motion by Rep. Gargasz. On May 19, 2016 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment 1767s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Shurtleff. The bill was enrolled on June 1, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 21, 2016, making it Chapter 281 of the session laws.
