  • House committee: Education

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2015 and referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 28, 2015. The committee met in executive session on February 10, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on October 7, 2015, October 14, 2015 and October 27, 2015. The committee met in executive session on October 27, 2015 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2015-2538h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 12–7. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2015-2538h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 7, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On January 7, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 184–137. On January 7, 2016 the bill was referred to the Executive Departments and Administration committee, whose chair waived the referral under House Rule 46(f). It crossed to the Senate on February 18, 2016 and was referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 1, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 10, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on March 23, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 1, 2016, making it Chapter 12 of the session laws. It took effect on April 1, 2016.
