The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2016 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 12, 2016. The committee held a work session on January 26, 2016. The committee met in executive session on February 2, 2016 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 13–6 to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2016-0309h), and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2016-0309h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 9, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On March 9, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 17, 2016 and was referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 13, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate study it after the session ends. On May 12, 2016 the Senate failed “Refer to Interim Study” on a voice vote. On May 12, 2016 the Senate rejected a motion to lay it on the table, on a motion by Sen. Boutin. On May 12, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 19, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 3, 2016, making it Chapter 174 of the session laws.
