HB 1266 (2016)
legalizing firecrackers.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2015-2016
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Commerce
- Subject: Miscellaneous
The Story
It was introduced on January 6, 2016 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 29, 2016. The committee met in executive session on February 11, 2016 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 9–3 to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2016-0412h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2016-0412h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 9, 2016, changing the text of the bill. On March 9, 2016 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 17, 2016 and was referred to the Senate Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 29, 2016. The committee recommended that the Senate kill it. On April 28, 2016 the Senate rejected a motion to kill it. On April 28, 2016 the Senate voted to pass it and ordered it to a third reading, on a motion by Sen. Bradley. The bill was enrolled on May 12, 2016 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 31, 2016. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 16, 2016 the House voted 132–119 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
