SB 179 (2015)

relative to eligibility to vote and relative to availability of voter information.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2015-2016
  • House committee: Election Law
  • Senate committee: Public and Municipal Affairs
  • Subject: Elections

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2015 and referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 18, 2015. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2015-1025s). The committee's amendment (1025s) was adopted on a roll call 13–10 on March 26, 2015, changing the text of the bill. On March 26, 2015 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 13–10 and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 7, 2015. The committee met in executive session on April 21, 2015, April 29, 2015 and May 27, 2015. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2015-1944h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 9–8. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (1944h) was adopted on a voice vote on June 3, 2015, changing the text of the bill. On June 3, 2015 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 211–145. On June 4, 2015 the Senate adopted “Sen. Birdsell Concurs with House Amendment #1944h, NT” on a voice vote. An enrolled bill amendment (2015-2293EBA) was adopted on a voice vote on June 11, 2015. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2015 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2015-2293e) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor vetoed it on July 10, 2015. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 16, 2015 the Senate voted 13–11 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
