HB 151 (2015)

establishing a committee to study end-of-life decisions.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2015-2016
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Health and Human Services
  • Subject: Study Committees and Commissions

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2015 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 20, 2015. The committee met in executive session on February 4, 2015 and February 12, 2015. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 9–7. The report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 4, 2015 the House voted to pass it on a division vote 189–161. It crossed to the Senate on March 5, 2015 and was referred to the Senate Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 24, 2015. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 30, 2015 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 7, 2015 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on June 2, 2015. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 11, 2015 the House voted 184–154 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
