  • Term: 2013-2014
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
  • Chapter law: 166

The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2013 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 19, 2013. The committee met in executive session on February 28, 2013 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on April 23, 2013, April 25, 2013, April 30, 2013 and September 19, 2013. The committee met in executive session on October 30, 2013 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 15–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2013-2356h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 8, 2014 the House adopted “Amendment #2356h” on a voice vote. On January 8, 2014 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on February 19, 2014 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 18, 2014. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2014-1213s). The committee's amendment (1213s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 17, 2014, changing the text of the bill. On April 17, 2014 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 7, 2014 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment #1213s” on a voice vote, on a motion by Rep. Pantelakos. The bill was enrolled on May 22, 2014 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 11, 2014, making it Chapter 166 of the session laws.
