HB 1244 (2014)

relative to the disclosure of the names of lottery winners.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2013-2014
  • House committee: Executive Departments and Administration
  • Senate committee: Executive Departments and Administration
  • Subject: Miscellaneous

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2014 and referred to the House Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 21, 2014. The committee met in executive session on February 4, 2014 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 13–5 to recommend that the House kill it, and the report was placed on the regular calendar. On March 6, 2014 the House rejected a motion to kill it on a division vote 149–150. On March 6, 2014 the House voted to pass it on a division vote 172–130, on a motion by Rep. Kurk. It crossed to the Senate on March 13, 2014 and was referred to the Senate Executive Departments and Administration committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 9, 2014. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 17, 2014 the Senate voted to lay it on the table on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Bradley. On April 24, 2014 the Senate adopted “Remove From Table” on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Bradley. On April 24, 2014 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 1, 2014 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on June 13, 2014. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On September 17, 2014 the House voted 160–142 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
