SB 198 (2013)

relative to the authority of county correctional officers.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2013-2014
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Public and Municipal Affairs
  • Subject: Police
  • Chapter law: 194

The Story

It was introduced on February 14, 2013 and referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 13, 2013. The committee voted unanimously, 5–0, to recommend that the Senate pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 28, 2013 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 3, 2013 and was referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. On April 24, 2013 the bill was referred to the Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 21, 2013. The committee met in executive session on May 28, 2013 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 11–2 to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1882h), and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (1882h) was adopted on a voice vote on June 5, 2013, changing the text of the bill. On June 5, 2013 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 12, 2013 the Senate voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Boutin. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2013 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 2, 2013, making it Chapter 194 of the session laws. It took effect on August 31, 2013.
